Moisture Risk Management Strategies for Mass Timber Buildings educates designers, construction professionals, and building developers on best practice design and construction strategies for the moisture management of mass timber buildings.

Mass timber projects require a tailored plan rather than a one-size-fits-all approach to managing moisture. This guide outlines a three-step process that project teams can use to assess the moisture risks of a mass timber building project and create a building-specific moisture management plan that will be executed during the construction phase. The content was informed by RDH’s experience providing mass timber enclosure design and moisture management services to projects throughout North America and beyond. References and additional resources are included.

This updated Version 3 of the guide describes best practices learned from recent boots-on-the-ground mass timber project experiences. The content has been greatly expanded with guidance on balancing active and passive moisture protection strategies and adapting the recommended tools to develop a project-specific moisture management plan. It also provides considerations for drying and cleaning mass timber elements that have been exposed to moisture. Case studies have been added to illustrate how RDH and other professionals have applied the recommended steps and guidance to real mass timber projects.

This guide is a companion to Mass Timber Building Enclosure Best Practice Design Guide V2.
