The Automated People Mover (APM) at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is an electric, driverless train system featuring a 2.25-mile elevated guideway with six stations—three within the Central Terminal Area (CTA) and three outside, serving LAX Economy Parking, the Airport Metro Connector station, and the LAX Consolidated Rent-A-Car (ConRAC) facility. Operating 24/7, the APM aims to provide time-certain access to terminals and reduce traffic congestion and vehicle emissions.

RDH was engaged by Bagatelos Architectural Glass Systems to design and engineer custom cantilevered steel post and glazing windscreen systems for all six APM stations and the maintenance facility. This included concrete embed systems to support the cantilevered windscreens under high wind and dynamic pressure conditions. RDH also designed barrier wall systems that integrate Horton automatic doors. The project involved comprehensive structural analyses and multiple review cycles with specialty security consultants representing LAWA to meet critical compliance requirements for safe public transit infrastructure.
